Crown lifting is removal of the lowest branches or sections of the lowest branches to give a uniform height from ground level. Common reasons for crown lifting are to increase light levels and give greater access for vehicles. In the UK, highways regulations state that the clearance over a highway must be 5.5 meters and 2.5 meters over a footway.
